In 2015 we published an article on this website confirming that an inquiry into claims of historic sex abuse at Underley Hall School in Cumbria was being reviewed. Underley Hall School had been closed in 2012 after being judged ‘inadequate’ by an OFSTED report.

An initial investigation had taken place in 1996-97, but the quality of that inquiry had been called into question. The review was to run in parallel with an ongoing police investigation into reports of sexual abuse at schools in Cumbria known as Operation Tweed.

The BBC is now reporting that five men aged between 57 and 72 have been charged with assaults that are believed to have taken place at Underley Hall School. The men are due to appear at South Cumbria Magistrates Court on 15 February.
