Our client was just 15 years of age when she was abused by an older man who was both controlling and manipulative. He was convicted for child abduction and sexual activity with a child. He was sentenced to serve 4 ½ years in prison for his offences against our client.
When she was 19 years old, she appointed a member of our specialist team of abuse lawyers to claim criminal injuries compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority on a no win, no fee basis.
The time limit for making a claim was due to expire on her 20th birthday, so it was important for us to act swiftly. Our lawyers are experienced in making criminal injury compensation claims and have successfully recovered substantial compensation on behalf of abuse victims under the government’s CICA compensation scheme.
A CICA application was prepared and submitted to the CICA. Further evidence was obtained to support the application, including our client’s GP records. This allowed us to investigate whether our client would be eligible for a higher award on the basis that she suffered a disabling mental injury as a result of the abuse.
The CICA accepted that the abuse had a significant detrimental effect on our client’s mental health and wellbeing and offered her an award of £16,500, which she chose to accept.
