The Church of England Redress Scheme
The Church of England has introduced a compensation scheme to support survivors of abuse linked to the Church. After years of consultations and feedback, the Church has established this redress scheme, which is designed to offer financial compensation, access to therapy, and official recognition of the harm abuse survivors have experienced.
While the scheme still needs to be approved by Parliament, it is expected to address various forms of abuse by individuals associated with the Church of England, including sexual, physical, spiritual, emotional, and financial abuse, as well as neglect.
Even if the incidents occurred many years ago, survivors will still be able to apply for compensation through the scheme, though there will be a five-year deadline for submitting applications once the scheme officially begins.
While the exact amount of compensation survivors will receive remains undisclosed, the Church has pledged £150 million to fund the initiative.
Elizabeth Duncan who heads up our abuse team previously spoke to the BBC, expressing hope that the scheme would provide meaningful compensation for survivors of abuse within the Church. She is therefore delighted that the scheme has been announced, describing it as, “a crucial step in helping survivors to heal and move forward with their lives.”
