A reverend and part-time teacher has been banned from teaching after he failed to report safeguarding breaches concerning a convicted sex offender.
It is reported that the priest permitted a male to stay at the parish centre after learning that his family had become homeless. However, he was aware that the male had previously sexually abused a child and was a convicted sex offender. He was also aware that the male was not allowed unsupervised access with individuals under the age of 16. Despite this, the reverend failed to report the risk of the offender breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). The police later located the offender with a child and therefore arrested him for breaching his SHPO.
Concerns were raised by the Teaching Regulation Agency and it was noted that the priest exhibited a ‘dismissive attitude’. He was subsequently suspended from Queenswood School, an all-girl independent boarding school, and has since been banned from teaching. Due to the seriousness of the matter he is not entitled to apply for restoration of his eligibility to teach.
