NHS data breach is back in the news after an experienced midwife in Nottingham recently made admissions about looking through over 1,200 patient records when she did not have permission to do so.
The midwife, Victoria Reed, worked at Nottingham University Hospitals, which encompasses City Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre. An investigation was conducted and Reed claimed she had accessed 87 patients records between the 11th – 14th September 2024.
The investigation found that Reed had actually accessed 1,214 patients records, which comprised 640 trauma in-patients, 387 adult intensive care patients, and 97 neonatal patients. Reed had accessed these records via an electronic patient record system ‘Nervecentre’ on her mobile phone, whilst she was at home.
Reed was suspended from her position for a 12 month period, and has since left her employment. A Nursing and Midwifery hearing conducted on the 10th January 2025 saw Reed avoid being struck off, and it is reported that Reed now works as a housekeeper at a spa hotel. The panel described the matter as a “clear breach of confidentiality” and no explanation was offered by Reed for her actions. She did, however, acknowledge that she had “betrayed the trust” of patients.
